Gap Year – Homeschool – Redshirting

This upcoming year is an unique one for James and Maya, who are 2 years and 2 months apart. Today is the last weekday of summer, before we begin pre-K at home. It will be an exciting but equally daunting challenge for me, to teach them at home, 5 days/week. 😅

The goal is for both of them to be better prepared for the school year ahead of them, and to keep my kids who are 2 years apart in life, 2 years apart in school, instead of 3 years apart as determined by the enrollment calendar.

We started James in a pre-K 3’s class and he continued on through pre-K 4. Last year, he added on speech therapy once per week, too. His late summer birthday falls where he could be enrolled in Kindergarten this school year. After a lot of thought and discussion, we decided to keep him homeschooled this year, aside from speech. This will serve as his “gap year” before he begins Kindergarten Fall 2020. My goals for him this year are to continue making strides in speech, reinforce old and learn new, develop maturity, and establish daily routines.

I will be teaching Maya too, as she still isn’t old enough to enroll in the 3’s class. (Omg my last baby will be 3 in less than 2 months!) She will spend the year learning alongside him, with age appropriate activities to pair with his.

School supply shopping…

This year is going to be a new challenge for me, but a huge advantage for both kids! I am so thankful that I am able to be home with them to do this, and grateful for the resources that are available for homeschooling families.

What are your favorite learning resources for pre-K kids? What do you like to do to support social skills of little ones?
